Georgia Tech requires proof of English language proficiency for:

The Georgia Tech Language Institute (GTLI) supports these requirements through:
- Upper Advanced (700-level) Intensive English Program (IEP) courses for graduate applicants
- English proficiency assessments for prospective J-1 visitors

How can I satisfy the English proficiency requirement?
International graduate applicants may satisfy the English proficiency requirement in one of the following ways:
- Complete all 700-level IEP courses
- Successfully complete Reading 700, Writing 700, Listening 700, and Speaking 700.
- Earn a minimum grade of 80% in each course.
- Courses are offered live online (synchronous).
- Course grades never expire.
- TOEFL iBT
- Minimum required scores vary by academic program.
- Scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.

Prospective J-1 Scholars and Interns
Under the regulations of the U.S. Department of State (DOS), all J-1 exchange visitors must demonstrate English-language proficiency so that they can:
- Perform their role at Georgia Tech
- Navigate daily life in the United States
- Read and comprehend program materials
- Understand their rights and responsibilities
- Obtain assistance when needed
Required proficiency levels:
- Scholar category: High Beginner
- Student Intern / Professor / Specialist: Intermediate
Accepted forms of evidence:
- GTLI English assessment
- Official TOEFL or IELTS scores
- Degree from an English-medium institution
